Astro-Turf Site; Construction Date Set

May 20, 2011

At the end of October 2011, Ballard School will launch its state of the art Astro-Turf pitch after recently winning planning approval from the New Forest District Council.

This special project has been funded entirely from the school’s accumulated reserves.

The pitch will primarily host school hockey games but will also include recreational football, junior cricket and wet weather play.

The new artificial grass hockey pitch will be surfaced with the latest type of quick and responsive sand dressed carpet.  The pitch will be a great asset to the sports’ curriculum and will be used by all ages of the school’s intake from 1 ½ years up to 16 year olds.

The pitch will comprise of a full-size hockey pitch together with a spectator area and a number of goal storage areas.  It will be enclosed by a twin-bar weld mesh fence with a foam backed carpet applied to the kickboards to reduce the sound from hockey ball strikes.

The construction of the pitch will begin in July with the majority of the manual work taking place whilst the pupils are on Summer Holidays.

One student at Ballard says, “We’re all very excited for the fun games that we can play on the pitch! We can’t wait for it to be launched!”

Speaking of the launch of the pitch, Headmaster Alastair Reid states, “Our plan is to have a turf cutting ceremony at the school Open Day on Saturday 25th June. The ceremony will take place during the morning”.

Alastair goes on to say, “This investment marks another significant step in Ballard’s progress and complements other recent improvements such as the changing rooms and toilet refurbishment, pre-prep conservatory, swimming pool changing rooms and the repainting of the main house”.

For the pupils of Ballard to have an Astro pitch is a great opportunity to develop their learning potential even further. Playing sports and engaging with other students in a team-working environment can help develop their attention, focus, speed and help improve their overall brain health and performance.

Alastair states, “Governors are demonstrating confidence in the School’s future and endeavoring to enhance and improve our current substantial facilities. The facility will be accessed by pupils of all ages and we look forward to enabling parents and visitors to view some high-quality hockey matches on our own campus.   It will be great when the pitch is finished; we’re now looking forward to when the construction of it begins in earnest”.
