Headmaster’s Blog Post – Friday 20th May

May 20, 2011

Some parents have been asking about the rationale behind the Sports’ Day move to King’s Park.

With the advent of the Astro Turf we shall lose the 400m track on the main field. The top field is too tight for a decent 400m track and, in any case, is very uneven for running. This field is also essential for car parking for the Open Morning / Sports’ Day. More importantly, we have been concerned for several years about health and safety with our throwing events.

A move to King’s Park gives us a wonderful venue with top range facilities for all events, a facility we can use even if it has been raining (it has a ‘tartan’ track), an opportunity to showcase athletics in our ‘sport for all’ emphasis at Ballard and excellent facilities for spectating.

We realise, of course, that this breaks up the Open Day focus at Ballard and that for some families there will be extra travelling into Bournemouth. This year will be an experiment, in any case, and so let’s see how things turn out once we have tried it!

Thanks (in advance) for your understanding. In 2012 we are considering moving Sports’ Day to a mid-week games’ afternoon so that Open Day can continue to have the emphasis on showing off the School, to have the picnics as normal and then to enjoy a ‘festival of sport’ with parent / staff / pupil games in the afternoon. This would certainly be fitting for the Olympic year!
