Ballard gives back – School raises record sums for local Children’s Cancer Ward

June 16, 2011

Pupils here at Ballard School have shown tremendous spirit and given something back to the local community whichwe serve. They recently took a decision to hold a charity week in aid of the Piam Brown Children’s Cancer Ward at Southampton General Hospital and, as a result of a week of great effort and fun, nearly £6000 was raised to help the ward which treats all types of childhood cancer up to those aged 16. Last Wednesday (15th June) they proudly handed the funds over to the Ward at an official cheque presentation summit.

This was no ordinary, stand-alone fundraiser. Instead the school council, which has representatives from every form group from year 3 through to year 11, put together an action plan to host a week full of a variety of fundraising initiatives. The activities on offer included various cake sales, karaoke singing competitions, a series of Staff vs Pupils sporting fixtures on the final day of term, and even a “role reversal” day which saw pupils taking over the roles of Headmaster, Deputy Heads and various other members of the staff faculty. The lucky “new headmaster” was given the privilege of officiating over an end-of-term award ceremony and gave new parents an introduction to the school.

Ballard School is only a short drive away from Southampton and the city’s General Hospital. The students felt passionate about giving toward a cause that was local and close to their hearts, especially as one particular student at Ballard recently received intensive treatment at the unit. The Piam Brown unit, a regional paediatric oncology and haematology centre in the South Central area which cares for children aged 0 – 16 years, is based within Southampton General Hospital’s Wessex Paediatric Oncology Centre and is one of 22 regional centres across the UK treating children and adolescents with cancer and haematological disorders. The unit comprises of a ten-bed inpatient ward, a day care and outpatient area and the children’s community outreach team.

Other donations from events earlier in the term as well as additional donations from parents helped to boost the fund.  Ballard School’s “Real” Headmaster, Alastair Reid, said he is proud of his pupils’ efforts: “I am so pleased that we have been able to raise such a significant sum to help a facility that is close to many of our hearts.  It has been a great team effort during the week and I would like to thank everyone who has helped”.

Pupils and members of staff proudly delivered the raised funds to the Ward on Wednesday. One of the students said: “We had a lot of fun raising money for the Piam Brown Unit. It’s nice to know that in some small way, we’ve helped children less fortunate than ourselves.” Headmaster Mr Reid continued: “The School is no stranger to giving back to the community and we run various initiatives throughout the academic year.”
