Our New Astro-Turf Site Development

August 13, 2011

At the end of October 2011 we will launch our state of the art Astro-Turf pitch after  winning planning approval from the earlier in the year with New Forest District Council. This special project has been funded entirely from the school’s accumulated reserves.

The pitch, which will primarily host school hockey games and also include recreational football, junior cricket and wet weather play, is one of only a handful in the county.

The new artificial grass hockey pitch will be surfaced with the latest type of quick and responsive sand dressed carpet.  The pitch will be a great asset to our sports’ curriculum and will be used by all ages of the school’s intake from 1 ½ years up to 16 year olds.

The pitch will comprise of a full-size hockey pitch together with a spectator area and a number of goal storage areas.  It will be enclosed by a twin-bar weld mesh fence with a foam backed carpet applied to the kickboards to reduce the sound from hockey ball strikes.

The construction of the pitch is well a truly underway, with the majority of the manual work taking place whilst the pupils are on Summer Holidays. One student at Ballard says, “We’re all very excited for the fun games that we can play on the pitch! We can’t wait for it to be launched!”

Headmaster Alastair Reid states, “Our plans are on track and the 2011/2012 school year is going to be an exciting one with this important addition. The astro-turf is emblematic of our commitment to all spheres of education: not focusing purely on the academics, but giving credence to extra-curricular activities too”.

Alastair goes on to say, “This investment marks another significant step in Ballard’s progress and complements other recent improvements such as the changing rooms and toilet refurbishment, pre-prep conservatory, swimming pool changing rooms and the repainting of the main house”.

For the pupils of Ballard to have an Astro pitch is a great opportunity to develop their learning potential even further. Playing sports and engaging with other students in a team-working environment can help develop their attention, focus, speed and help improve their overall brain health and performance.

Alastair states, “Governors are demonstrating confidence in the School’s future and endeavoring to enhance and improve our current substantial facilities. The facility will be accessed by pupils of all ages and we look forward to enabling parents and visitors to view some high-quality hockey matches on our own campus.   It will be great when the pitch is finished; which is on course for September / October”.
