Headmasters’ Start of Term Blog September 2011

September 5, 2011

Term is about to open with the return of the pupils and staff after a long summer break. In one significant sense, however, the School has not closed at all during July and August. Our maintenance staff, together with several separate sets of contractors, have been hard at work re-painting existing facilities and adding in substantial new ones. Using funds saved over many years, an Astro Turf Pitch is nearing completion on one part of our playing fields (primarily for hockey) whilst new cricket nets, an all-weather wicket and resurfaced tennis and netball courts have sprung up alongside. Wet-weather canopies, part funded by FOBS (our parent body), are tastefully located near the Main House and also beside the senior building. The Terrace at the front of the Main House has been re-paved and the rather battered grass replaced by authentic-looking artificial grass. Not to neglect our existing premises, three classrooms have been completely re-decorated and had some new furniture whilst the exterior of one of our oldest buildings, the Kefford Block (for art and the pre-prep), has been repainted to match in with the Main House.  There is a definite ‘wow’ factor for the start of the 2011-12 academic year!

Ballard has a holistic emphasis and we feel that by developing our facilities this all-round ethos will be considerably enhanced. Part of our task as staff (and parents) is to ensure that the pupils grasp the opportunities that are presented to them – ‘carpe diem’ (seize the day) will remain our unofficial motto as we move into the Autumn Term!
