Battlefields day 1 or is it 2?

September 20, 2012

What a great day. Have just arrived at hotel, with time to get ourselves sorted before supper. The whole day has gone perfectly to schedule, with some pleasant weather thrown in. Breakfast at Calais – first chance to parlay fransay – some doing better than others!

Our first proper stop of the day was Ypres, where we visited the Flanders Fields Museum, which gave us a great understanding of the First World War in general and particularly the horror of Ypres. We were also treated to seeing some filming for a new BBC costume drama, so we will be looking out for that in the future.

After picnic lunch in Ypres we headed for the Tyne Cot cemetry. The only words we could think of to describe seeing those 12,000 headstones, and 30,000 names were “moving” and “unbelievable” Several of us found family members commemorated here.

Next it was off to Sanctuary Wood. Here were real trenches, and everyone got a chance to explore the maze and tunnels as well as the museum, letting off some steam in the process.

Everyone has ended the day in high spirits and looking forward to a good meal and (hopefully) a great night’s sleep.
