Morocco day 4 – the Sahara

October 28, 2013

We shifted to 4wd vehicles in Erfoud, and raced across the desert, seeing the magnificent dunes of Erg Chebbi rise up before us, until we reached our bivouac. From here we shifted to camels, gently plodding and swaying up along the ridges of ever larger dunes. We dismounted and made the final steep climb on foot. From this vantage point we could enjoy the vastness of the dunes, and the brave or foolhardy tried some sandboarding – great going down, lung burning on the climb back up.
We returned to our luxury bivouac for dinner and entertainment by the fire pit.  Darkness revealed the firmament of stars, before a few of us rose to watch the sunrise bathe the dunes in light again.
