Sports Scholarship mentoring scheme

Ballard Sport have introduced a new Sports Scholarship mentoring scheme to enable our older pupils to help support the younger pupils. The Sports Scholar mentoring program is designed to support any scholar to balance their training and competition with their academic studies. Meeting formally once per term, our Year 11 Sports Elite pupils provide advice using their own experiences. Training has been provided and the Sports Scholars and mentors have been asked to meet weekly just to check how things are going.

Advice and training has been given also by the Ballard Sport staff who are also mentors to the Yr11 Sports Scholars. Advice on diet and nutrition has been promoted and the new Ballard Sport water bottle is encouraged to be used in sport and around the school. The aim is to develop the wining habit.

All of Ballard Sport are following:

  • Drink a large cup of water when you wake up
  • Drink between 2-4 litres of fluid per day
  • East a nutritious breakfast with some quality protein and carbohydrates
  • Consume 5-6 meals / snacks each day which contains quality protein, vitamins and minerals
  • Ensure your Carbohydrate intake is specific to your training an games (day before and day after for muscle recovery)
  • Drink regularly during training to keep fluid levels up
  • Sleep at least 8 hours a day to enhance recovery.
  • After a game or training think recovery and develop a winning habit!

The Sports Scholars have also been part of a Bournemouth University research project. This is to establish the impacts of sport and the stresses it brings. The scholars and mentors have completed a survey are and set to follow up the results on Tuesday 26th Jan.

Reports back from parents are that particularly the younger pupils enjoy having a mentor and have found it very useful.
