Sports’ Report #12 – Tuesday 3rd May 2016 – Ballard School

May 3, 2016

Ballard Summer Sport Programme

Our Director of Sport, Justin Whitbread, has written about the programme for sport for Ballard School’s summer term and we summarise some of this main points below:

The Ballard Sport Programme has started with a boom. We are targeting Athletics, swimming and of course the popular Rounders and Cricket. In addition we have activities on offer for Junior and seniors in Tennis, Summer Hockey, Netball and Volleyball.

Anyone for breakfast?

Tchoukball combines the pace and excitement of handball and volleyball, Tchoukball is the fastest handball sport in the world today.

Ballard also offers breakfast clubs all week long and the choices include Netball, Tag Rugby  (for years 5-11, in preparation for Yr6 Tag festival next year or just for fun and skill improvement) and Tchoukball for both boys and girls. If you want to know more about this sport – please follow the link here:
One aim of such an extensive offer is so that pupils may attempt as many of these as they can as well as preparing our teams for up and coming fixtures.

Athletics all the way for Ballard

Athletics on Tuesday and Thursday are an excellent chance for pupils to find an Athletic discipline they suit. There is an Athletic event for everyone. We are aiming to compete in the ISA championships in June and also the New Forest Championships. In addition, middle distance prepares pupils for the Lymington RNLI run in May.

Calling all Ballard School Parents

There are also opportunities for parents to be involved. One option is the PE Parent Forum  on Thursday 26th May; come and listen to the new strategies we have for Ballard Sport in the future.  This parent forum will particularly discuss the aims of PE lessons, the culture of Activities to support fixtures and also The “Ballard Way” in Sport that covers Fixtures, the captain policy and The “code of conduct” for pupils and parents.
Another chance to be involved and perhaps play a game (or two!) is on Friday 10th June. Here our PE department  are hosting a PE BBQ. This is designed to be an informal evening of sports, a chance to meet all of the team. With a Hog Roast, some outdoor sports when parents, teachers and pupils can play together as well as the very first Parents v Teachers netball game this is a prime opportunity to come and join in!

In the Sports News these past few weeks…

Ballard School has been in press this week after our hugely successful community hockey tournament. Do read about this in full in our blog here :‘Hockey Tournament’.

Our Alumni celebrate Olympic success

Our Alumni are also making the headlines as we found out Mikey Jones has made the Para-Olympic team for Swimming. Here is one of the tweets we sent out on one of our four Twitter accounts – @BallardAlumni.

DofE awards for all

Ballard runs an extremely successful Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and this past week saw pupils and staff receive awards. Ballard hosted the regional DofE presentation – here below is one of our tweets from the day. Congratulations to all!

And now for something completely different…

You may have heard of chefs going to extremes but on 24th April a small group from our catering department, led by our chef Richard, abseiled down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth in aid of Cancer Research UK. The group of 4 raised a lot of money and of the 35 people who took part they jointly raised £16,000.
