Year 3

Y3’s went to Southampton Art Gallery where they had a tour of the gallery to start with and looked at a variety of different paintings from the ‘Old Masters’ to ‘Pop Art’ and sculpture.

Listening intently about the artwork

They then had a mixed media mono-printing workshop based on the wavey geometric shapes of the artist Bridget Riley combined with the artist Paul Klee which they are studying in school.

From her manager’s website Bridget Riley is described as being “brought to prominence by the Op Art movement during the early 1960s” (attrib:Karsten Schubert).

Over all this was a thoroughly enjoyable day where the children gained some valuable experiences and experienced some exciting and new art techniques.

Our thanks to all who went with the group, the helpers and the art workshop team.

Year 7

This year our Year 7 group have been getting creative around the topic of ‘The City’. Transport features highly in their work – as we have seen in previous blogs with their work. (Here is some of their work in progress!)

This week they have been working in clay – with their car sculptures. As with so much of Ballard’s art work colour is a prominent feature and you can’t miss the bright blues and oranges chosen by our groups. Car colours for the future, perhaps?!

Year 8

Year 8 Art recently hosted a local artist, Steve Porter, to lead them in an Artist Workshop to create a mural. In a previous Artistic Impression blog Steve came and worked with Year 7 on their mural, which is now in one of our corridors. (Artistic Impression #5)

2016.2.12 Yr 7 art mural project (7)

This mural took on a sporty theme, to tie into this Olympic Year and also as this was to be hung in our Sports Hall!

The pupils worked in groups of 4 and spent 25 mins each with the artist.

Our Head of Art, Jan Dunn said of the project:

“We had spoken before with the classes about doing bright abstract colours for the background and then silhouettes of sports people/equipment to go on top.”

In order to show the maximum amount of photographs (as we took many to capture the progress of this whole class project) without having to scroll down too far… we have put together a montage of these photos below – we hope you enjoy them and do let us know what you think!
