Athletics Week 2016

Leading up to our Saturday Open Morning (18th June 2016) and Ballard Birthday Bash (#Ballard21st on social media) we are having an Athletics Week (14th-17th June 2016).

What’s going to happen?

Starting with a day for Years 6-10 with Field Events and Middle Distance, this week is all part of The Ballard Way. Our Year 10 Sports Elite Silver group will be supporting the PE department with the running of the events over this week. Wednesday and Thursday will mainly consist of sprints, relays and a Tug of War! Friday is our ‘Mini Athletics Day’ with Lower Prep (Years 3-5) featuring in the morning and our Nursery and Pre-Prep finishing off our week of Sport with their races, which includes a parent’s race!

It’s a first for Ballard Sailing

Dinghy Team Racing Match against Ryde School

Our newly formed Ballard sailing team recently had their first team racing match against Ryde School.

They had a steep learning curve racing against the experienced Ryde team with several of their members racing in national squads. All competitors faced tough conditions with strong gusts of wind blowing off the Island shore causing boat handling challenges for both teams.

The teams raced a match series of four races and our Ballard team responded very well against the stiff opposition. On the day they raced in RS vision dinghies with reefed mainsails which were a powerful challenge particularly for our lighter team comprising of mainly year 9 sailors against largely year 10 Ryde sailors. Nearing the end of the series our Ballard team were ‘mixing it’ well with the opposition and using team tactics to gain some good match points.

All of our team greatly enjoyed the experience and are very keen to compete in a return match and also compete in future team racing with other schools on the circuit. Team racing matches are normally sailed in RS Feva dinghies and we are investigating developing opportunities for our sailors with these dinghies in future. With many skilled junior sailors at also Ballard the future looks bright for developing our teams.
