Ballard School celebrates its 21st birthday in style

Last weekend, the school welcomed parents, children and guests from the local community, including the Mayor of New Milton Cllr. David Hawkins, for its 21st Birthday celebration and Open Morning. A number of special events were organised including the planting of a time capsule, Formula 1 model racing, an art exhibition and a street party for 600 in the school courtyard with live music provided by the school choirs, ensembles and orchestra.

This was also an opportunity to celebrate ten members of teaching, support and catering staff who had served 21 years or more working at Ballard.

Headmaster of Ballard School, Alastair Reid, commented:

“At Ballard, we wanted to do something extra special to celebrate both our own 21st birthday and the Queen’s 90th birthday. Following a highly successful and popular street party lunch, I would like to personally thank everyone who attended and all the students for providing us with some first class entertainment.’’

We started off the day with many of our staff and helpers setting out the largest venue for the day – our courtyard. This included putting out the tables and chairs for the street party lunch -no mean feat! The wet weather we saw earlier in the week (see the top picture for evidence!) moved away and throughout the day we had a bright sunny morning and a cooler afternoon for our street party lunch and musical entertainment.

Refreshments on the Terrace

We had a beautiful sunny morning and drinks for parents, visitors and VIPs were served on the Terrace. Our thanks go to all who helped but especially the catering team who worked tirelessly and in so many locations throughout the day to provide refreshments and the lunch we all enjoyed so much.

Tree Planting and Time Capsule

The special event began with the burying of the time capsule in the school grounds along side the ceremonial tree planting of a cherry tree. The pupils, parents, invited guests and staff gathered around to watch the two ceremonies. Members of staff and governors who have had involvement in Ballard School for the past 21 years (and before!) were presented with the rare ‘Ballard Bears’ by the Senior Prefects who then helped with the planted of the tree.

Open Morning and Events

Our Open Morning was underway as the events of the day got underway. They included the ‘F1 for Schools’ event on our Tennis Courts, Art demonstrations, Science displays (including making custard and ‘Going to the beach’) and mixed rounders on the astro. Our Duke of Edinburgh group showed us their skills and many classrooms were also open for the many parents and visitors to explore.

Ballard School- Dance, Music, Sport

Our Performing Arts were on superb display with Dance on the Terrace, Music at the French Cafe, and later at the street party itself. A whole host of sport was on offer throughout the day – both formally and informally. Volleyball, Rounders and Table Tennis were among those on offer.

Food, Glorious, Food

The catering team are to be congratulated with the spread on offer for our Open Morning and Ballard Birthday Bash. The preparation was immense with over 140 baguettes made on the morning of the event, as well as the rest of the food for refreshments throughout the day. Our Home Economics dept put on a display of their creations – some of which is shown in this collage of Ballard Food from the day.

Street Party Lunch

This special occasion was completed with a spectacular street party style lunch for 600 people in our courtyard.  The food was laid out and brought out for all to enjoy while we listened to the Music Department and their entertainment for the day. Our 21st birthday cake was made by a staff member. Family groups ate together as well as Alumni and Staff. Our Friends of Ballard School served us drinks from outside the PAC and we were kindly donated Cobra Beer by a friend of the school, Lord Bilimoria.

Thank you all

Our thanks to all who helped make our Ballard Birthday Bash such a success. Many people have commented on the day and here are some of their quotes!

There was a wonderful Ballard family atmosphere, the courtyard looked splendid. It was also very evident that a lot of hard work, energy and careful planning had gone into making it so memorable for the pupils, parents and other guests alike.

And some from our Governors

We thought today was tremendous in every way. Your staff team did a fantastic job! The street party was a brilliant idea and on arrival the vista of red and blue tables balloons etc was  tremendous. We toured around most places and the staff were so interesting to talk to, so enthusiastic for their subject and clearly wanting the best for their children.

Despite the challenges caused by the unpredictable weather, the Birthday Bash really showed off all those qualities that makes us so fond of Ballard – its usual team spirit shone through!
