Sports’ Report 16/17 #4 – Tuesday 4th October 2016

Ballard School Swimming

Sport across the year (and years)

Over the next week, every child at Ballard School will be handed their plan for the whole year. They are subject to change; however it gives pupils and parents the information of the sports being covered.

Careful thought and planning is put into this to ensure breadth and balance whilst ensuring opportunity to develop and prepare for the traditional games. The plans, combined with the extra provision, enable the child to learn new skills, refine old ones in line with a growth mindset.

Years 5 and 6

For boys in Year 5 & 6, we utilise our outdoor pool in the first Autumn term to free up valuable Summer sport time between Easter and July. Having such a short summer and having Athletics and Cricket as the main sports, obviously these take up a lot of time. Swimming is still available to all as clinics after school and the breakfast club on a Wednesday starting at 7:30-8:15.

Sport for the all round child

The plans provide a mixture and variety of sports, that development movement on and off the ball (transferable skills), Fitness (Health Related Exercise) where methods of training are learnt as well as strength and conditioning exercises and also gymnastics and Dance. All are key areas to enhance a child’s development and hopefully encourage a thirst for learning, no matter the child. Not all are natural Rugby or Netball players so experience of other sports are vital.

Years 3 and 4

In Year 3 and 4 we provide a “wrap around” approach that develops preparation for a game on a Tuesday and plenary on a Thursday, which helps evaluate and improve on their games.

Year 9

In Year 9 pupils are offered the chance to start the Pre GCSE PE or Dance course and bank some practicals in Swimming and Athletics, whilst also studying the traditional sports in more detail by using theory and ICT. Technical knowledge and terminology are encouraged in preparation for their possible option of taking PE or Dance at GCSE.

For current parents: If you want to view other Year groups, the are on Sharepoint and also on the Ballard sport portal.

What’s on the (sporting) horizon?

Inter – House is coming up for Years 3-8 on 26th October in Football and Hockey.

There is also the opportunity to buy sports equipment at our linked sports shop that will be based under the canopy from 2pm – 4pm that day.
