Performing Arts at Ballard School

Dance is enjoyed by a full range of pupils at Ballard from Kindergarten to the senior school where GCSE in Dance is offered. The school provides high quality dance lessons and activities that cover the four main strands of Dance within the curriculum PE lessons.  We not only engage pupils as performers but develop them as choreographers and dancers that can analyse their work.

The word ‘Eureka’ comes from the Classical Greek word ‘Heurēka’, meaning ‘I have found it’. It is closely related to the English word ‘heuristic’, which refers to experience-based techniques for problem solving, learning and discovery. ‘Eureka!’ is an interjection used to celebrate a discovery or invention, a transliteration of an exclamation attributed to the Ancient Greek scholar Archimedes.
Ballard School’s dance production explores some of the many different ‘Eureka!’ moments in history such as Newton and the Laws of Motion, discovery of galaxies, Sir Alexander Fleming and penicillin, the invention of the wheel, the first landing on the Moon, Electricity and the light bulb and the world’s first successful airplane. Our dance teachers have worked with pupils across the whole school to create various responses to these and other Eureka! moments, expressed through the wonderful art of dance.

Eureka! took place recently with two sold out performances in the Performing Arts Centre. The school production takes place every two years at Ballard and is open to all pupils. There are no auditions with an age group open to all year groups to participate in. We also have a Junior and Senior Dance Company called Visions for those who wish to take their skills to a higher level and perform in a variety of opportunities throughout the school year and they also performed in the production.

Eureka! Dance production 2017

Eureka has been worked on since September 2016 with many hours of rehearsals with each group involved during school activity time and lunch and break times!

It was a very successful production with a great range of ages and abilities participating. It was a very positive and exciting opportunity that all those involved will remember for many years to come.

Some comments from those who attended and performed:

I have enjoyed putting all the dances together.

I have loved the performances and I want to do it all again!

Our two granddaughters love it and chatted about the dancing all the way home.  Over breakfast we tried to remember all the different ‘eureka moments’.  We managed 10/12!

Thank you to all who made Eureka! possible – Sharon Ladbury
