Ballard School Sports’ Report – 21st March 2017

Sport at Ballard this term has been full on (as usual!) with our Jersey Sports’ Tour a highlight for many of our Upper Prep pupils. On Friday 3rd March 70 pupils and 12 members of staff attended the annual Sports’ ball at Barton-on-Sea Golf Club, to celebrate and recognise the sporting achievements of Year 10 and 11 students. We have successfully held tournaments, such as the friendly tag rugby festival mentioned in this blog. Acclaim on the pitch too for, among others, Ballard’s U13 girls football and U16 rugby team.

Girls’ football success

Our U13 girls headed to Kew House School for the ISA Sport London West tournament on Monday 20th March. As our tweet says – our girls were unbeaten in all matches! Many congratulations to them and the staff who coached them

Tag rugby

Ballard Sport hosted a friendly festival for Tag Rugby on Friday 17th March. This was set up as a chance to get some practice before the reschedule of the main festival that is run by New Forest Sports Partnership.

On a cold blustery afternoon, we had nine schools attend and teams were put into three Pools depending on age and ability.

The spirit of the game was evident in end to end play and parents enjoying free flowing Rugby. Scores were not taken and schools were encouraged to allow different pupils a chance to receive the ball at restarts and to encourage team play.

The afternoon was a great success and plays as a pre-runner to the New Forest Sports Partnership tag rugby event to be held at Ballard later in the year.

You are never too young to mentor!

Pre-Prep mentoring programme kicks off

Pre-Prep mentors from Year 2 will support our Reception and Year 1 pupils,

The pupils in Year 2 have been preparing this term to become PE Mentors to Reception and Year 1 peers. The buddying system was hugely successful during the trial phase as Year 2 pupils supported different Reception and Year 1 pupils each lesson. Mr Freeman paired the mentoring buddies together this week as the PE Mentors and Mentees were given their personalised Pre-Prep PE passports.

The passports will be used to detail targets for the pupils. The Year 2 pupils will use the passport to help  guide their mentees learning and aid both buddies to coach and reflect.

When assessing pupils in Year 2, the PE teachers observe pupils’ leadership skills as well as the Reception and Year 1 pupils’ ability to be guided and listen to peers and their instructions and feedback.

This is the first time this programme has been rolled out and it has already seen outstanding responses from all pupils. The Pre-Prep pupils are a very talented group in this subject and are learning about indoor athletics in preparation for the summer programme along with key movement skills.
