BallardNormandie – Blog four

Missed our other BallardNormandie blogs for 2017? See blog one hereblog two and blog three.

The plan for our Ballard Year 6 Trip to Normandy, France today is as follows:

AM: Leave for Ste Mère Église
PM: Travel to Cherbourg

We start with a photo from yesterday evening.

Some of the children wanted to have a photo of the sunset – and Mont St Michel in the background – can you spot it there?

Ballard Normandie Mont St Michel

A beautiful sunset, posing in PJs and with Mont St Michel in the background!

This morning  was…a slow start for all!

We decided to make a detour by Pointe du Hoc (a WW2 site) because the weather is glorious!

At the Pointe du Hoc – An american Ranger Monument. Learning about the D-Day landings

La Pointe du Hoc was made famous in the movie “The longest day”. We went here to learn more about the D-Day landings and make the most of the clear visibility.

Barbed wire, bomb craters and bunkers in this WW2 site

We also visited the church in Sainte -Mère. We learnt about John Steele, the American paratrooper who got caught on the church tower in Sainte -Mère Église, the first town liberated by the Allied Forces on 6th June 1944.

He hung there for 2 hours pretending to be dead before being taken prisoner.
